When lockdown first hit, Abby Burridge didn’t know how to help her children with their Welsh homework. But after starting an intensive course, she began to feel confident – even talking to their teachers in Welsh on Zoom. Abby, Max and Grace now help each other with their homework.

Tafwyl preview – 15 years of Cardiff’s Welsh language arts and culture festival
Music, discussions and workshops will be taking place throughout this week as part of Tafwyl – Cardiff’s annual festival of Welsh language arts and culture. A pre-registered audience of 500 people will be allowed into Cardiff Castle for the main event on Saturday, May 15.
Social worker Galina Shires is learning Welsh after moving to Cardiff from Moldova
Social worker Galina Granici was working for a charity in Moldova when she met Welsh doctor Carwyn Shires, who was there as a volunteer. Fast-forward several years and they are now married, living in Cardiff, with Galina learning Welsh while expecting their first child in the summer.
Two months of learning Welsh and this is how it’s going
Two months ago, I didn’t speak a word of Welsh. Now 48 class hours, 264 Duolingo lessons and 130 coursebook pages later, it’s going pretty well. We’ve covered so much – from starting a conversation to discussing everyday activities and where we come from.
